Breast Reduction

Large, heavy breasts are usually a developmental phenomenon, which occurs in adolescence but may also occur later in life, either due to pregnancy, menopause or weight gain. This may cause the patient neck and back discomfort and may, in certain cases, severely restrict her physical activities.

The surgery is technically called a reduction mammoplasty and is done under general anesthesia, at our clinic. It usually takes approximately two hours to complete and is done as an out patient procedure. The associated discomfort is minimal. Not only do you get a reduction in volume of the breast but also a lift so that the nipple and areola are relocated to their appropriate level, and as well, a reduction of the areolar diameter.

Our Practice

As is the case with breast lift surgeries, the traditional technique requires three incisions called “anchor incisions” consisting in an incision around the nipple, a second vertical which goes down to the fold of the breast and a third one underneath the fold of the breast.

In certain cases, patients can benefit from the “lollipop incision” one incision around the nipple and a second vertical. This eliminates the need for the third incision under the fold of the breast, which sometimes heals poorly on account of it being in an area prone to friction.

Bruising happens occasionally and if that is the case, will usually lasts no more than two weeks. Slight swelling of the breasts might be noticeable for up to three months. We recommend a convalescence of approximately one week. Exercising can usually be resumed four weeks after the operation.

Dr. Papanastasiou has performed thousands of breast reductions in the past and will endeavor to give you the most natural-looking and esthetically pleasing breast after this surgery.
